Wow, totally awesome video, thanks so much for posting this.
Especially loved the whole functional look. No fancy false ceiling, all the plumbing exposed. Whole array of mechanical switches that get the job done.
Loved the orange digital display housed in the retro unit.

JD,

TWO AN124s(!) and one IL76 at Seeb today. The 124s both Volga-Dneper, the 76 unmarked - do you know who is operating it?

It occurred to me that some of these pilots were probably flying into Kabul, possibly in the same aircraft, in the 80s. Which of us then (on either the NATO or Soviet side) would EVER have believed this? How the world has changed.

Indeed!
How we are all led along by the collar - and are then expected to two the line when something "new" comes along.

I miss the Cold War

What's the hanging cabin under the flight deck for? Gunner/observer/drop toilet? (too lazy to google)

Ahhh Soltau.

You think it was bad in the winter in L√ľneberg? I think Berlin would give it a run for it's money any day!

Before my time, sir - I just loved growing up in the 80s!

Were you Ordnance or Signals or have I got it all wrong?

Absolutely awesome! I had the privilege of being on a roof top terrace in Azaiaba last Thursday morning when one flew overhead. Spectacular.

Is the Cold War still going on?? Why has the author removed his comments about his former location in West Germany? Expecting a call from the local branch of the Stazi/KGB??

Anon

Just like you, people have a right to anonymity on this blog. It drives me mental.

Some of us are in jobs where our identities need to be kept secret, however, it doesn't stop us from blogging for a little bit of amusement.

I get the feeling that what Omanobserver posted was giving away a little bit too much personal data with respect to where they were stationed in the past and it only takes a little bit of detective work to cross-reference those details and then the lid gets blown on someone's cover - albeit just on the blog but it can lead to a bigger set of problems.

So, to answer you question, while the Cold War may be over - you still never know who might be watching, and listening and reading ;)

It is indeed.
Was up the front of this particular Cossack a few weeks ago.
Very nice crew - got hammered with them the night before.

Interesting that, from what I can see, at least some of the IL-76s at Seeb seem to be operated by Skylink Aviation (out of Toronto?) and carry the registration RDPL, which belongs to Laos of all places! Are these all part of the same 'solution', alongside the Volga-Dneper AN-124s?
