"Bright" Omanis

Was reading through some of the comments on Muscat Confidential (the best blog in Oman by a long shot), when I came across, as usual, an anonymous comment which stated "it is not easy to find bright Omanis......to put it mildly."

The above comment is, to put it equally mildly, bollocks!

There are thousands and thousands of highly capable and extremely bright Omanis in this country and further afield. They are even within the lines of the blogs that we read each day.
Muscati? Abdullah? Amjad? - anybody want to go and have a face to face debate with any of those chaps?

My colleagues in the sky? Sharp as tacks. No problems there. Would trust each one of them with my life and in fact, on most days that is exactly what I do.
Air traffic controllers on the ground.
Muscat Tower - manned completely by Omanis. Hundreds of aircraft movements in a day.
Not an expat in sight. They do a fantastic job.

The Armed Forces in general - enough said. Great bunch of chaps.
The ROP Coastguard? Did I mention the rescue of the Russian Ambassador's wife? 36 hours non-stop searching in conditions that most other experts gave zero chance of survival or location in. They did it. Everyone got out alive.

Security guards in City Centre. Most of them speak about four languages. That's a security guard folks! The same bloke in the UK would be a school drop-out or a failed squaddie.

Difficult to find bright Omanis? - Spare me!

Yet again, hitting the nail on the head Jet Driver....If Anonymous had been at that Emergency Medical Conference for the past 3 days, he would have seen plenty of intelligent Omanis, who are a credit to their country!

umm!
I can't disagree with you! It is just that the Omanis are that showy at intelligence. Perhaps like British - under statement is the rule.

But when it comes to Indians - even fools feel intellectual - exaggeration is the golden rule

I would certainly hope people consider me as bright!
There are many bright people in Oman, just not every where. Many Omanis who work in the government sector (not sure how this is true with the private sector) are suppressed. I remember a relative of mine say: You go to college, have high dreams for changing and developing your country, you start working and reality slaps you on the face! No one wants to change nor do they want you to do well! They crush your spirit and make sure you stay where you are! and do as they say!

All a bit patronising this.

Patronising? Nonsense!

No point in me going off on a rant to prove that.

The facts are there.

No need to go off on a rant. By patronising I mean that the very act of writing about there being plenty of bright Omanis suggests that the case needs to be made - which it really doesn't. Intelligence is not the issue...
(and when I manage to start blogging about this myself I'll send you a link! In the meantime I apologise for the anonymous posts, which I know you hate).

There is no doubt that there are bright Omanis. Every nation has bright and dumb people, and Oman is no exception. I just want to point out that unlike other GCC countries, there are REALLY very bright young males and females in the Omani Royal Family. I know quite a good number of members of the Omani Royal Family, and almost all of them (the ones I know in person) are really bright Omanis, not to mention that they're young too, males and females. You rarely find this inside royal families of other GCC countries.

Anonymous said...

Amjad - what are you talking about? what do royal families have to do with this?

Jet Driver said...

By logic - Amjad is now accusing the other royal families in the GCC of being thick! And on my blog!

We could both be due a "visit" in the middle of the night!

Anonymous - They're Omani nationals, no? And this post is about Omani nationals, no? Plus, they're the future of the country, with other Omani nationals of course, so having very bright people of them is something worth mentioning. There are very bright Omani nationals as well as bright Omani nationals inside the Omani Royal Family as well. Very very very bright if I may add. They're the future leaders of this country, and I'm 100% certain that they will follow the wise leadership of HM the Sultan.

Jet Driver - Nah, I'm not accusing anyone with anything. But what you see in Oman is rarely seen in other GCC countries, and that's a fact, not an opinion. That's what makes Oman unique :)

Amjed.. I disagree..
I think you are making assumptions. Those are not facts unless you can tell us their IQ scores and compare them with other GCC countries!

The only thing that is unique about Oman is that no other country rules its land.. !! (other than that, its pretty similar to the rest of the world.. it has people, animals, plants, good people, and bad ones too)
