The Price Of Apples In Muscat

Outrageous! - that is all I can really say about this.

As some of you may already know, I am a Mac geek.
I love my MacBook, I love my iMac and I absolutely worship my iPhone.

Apple have dropped points off of my blood pressure, with a machine that has not crashed even once in the 18 months I have had it.
It is an awesome piece of quality engineering. It rocks!

If you are one of the great unwashed, who is still chained to a PC running Windows, then I beseech you to go out and by a MacBook - preferably the new MacBook Pro.
A truly positive life-changing experience!

Except......under no circumstances buy one in Muscat!

There is an Apple dealer based in Qurum, and in my opinion, the team there are some of the biggest shysters in the business. I can name names but I'll leave my mouth shut for now.

All I needed was a cable to connect to an external monitor. Apple manufacture a nifty little connector which costs US$17.99 on the Net.

The thieves in Qurum are charging 25 Rials - that's....wait for it......US$65.00

"It's the customs duty on it sir, very expensive you see. You are living here or on holiday?"

I needed it quickly, but the last straw was when they said that the card machine was down and that it was "cash only, sir, sorry sorry" - suspecting unscrupulous activity, I left.

Funny how when I bought it online and brought it in to show the barstewards that NO CUSTOMS DUTY WAS REQUIRED FOR IT, that they didn't know which way to look.

Ah, screw it! I've had enough - the place is called "Fusion Logic" - stay away!
I have reported them to Apple, so it will be interesting to see the response.

Buy your new Mac in Europe or even Dubai.

It was really nice to visit the Apple Store at Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai. I wonder if Apple will have any plans to move into the new mall in Qurum? I left when it was still cinderblocks and steel beams.

If Apple wanted to get into Qurum City centre, it would take them a week to get into the car park.

It is probably cheaper to order computer accessories all the way from the states and have them delivered using Aramex than buying them in Oman. It is insane.

Windows' security vulnerabilities, bugs, design and engineering oversight made me a lot of money back in the day :)

I second the recommendation for Apple-made computers. You might pay more upfront, but you will save the difference in downtime, recovery costs and your personal sanity.

The new MacBooks are also made of aluminum AND they have a discrete video card. The only remaining advantages of getting a MacBook Pro are the screen size, FireWire and Express Card slot.

The iPhone is a great device, though for me personally it is a little weak. It will be great when it becomes skinnier, lighter, gets significantly more storage, a better camera and support for latest network speeds. Once you cruise the web at Nawras' 3.5G while being in the middle of the desert, you can't go back to inferior 3G technology :)

No! Thanks!
I love my Vista! I think I will love Windows 7 more!
I have tried using Mac in my uncle's house...I am not impressed!
My laptop is 2+ and has not crashed even once!!

And your cable it is so in Oman - when compared to India some are nearly 10 rimes more (I am not talking of electronics but foodstuff and handicrafts)

You should blame Apple for the high prices. I don't disagree with you that Fusion Logic is expensive. But if you compare their prices with the other authorised reseller here in Oman, Loay, they are just about the same in accessories and cheaper in the hardware. I wanted a mini-dvi to vga cable myself and I refused to pay Fusion Logic's price. I ended up buying it from iStyle in Dubai. iStyle in Dubai are located in Ibn Batuta mall and at Festival City mall. I think the reason iStyle is cheaper is because they are owned by ABM, who are Apple's distributor for the middle east. Apple has really neglected this part of the world and has left us at the mercy of ABM. I bet Apple's prices to ABM are high to begin with.

I am told ABM is pushing at least one of its authorised resellers in each country to open a shop like iStyle. For Oman, Loay has agreed and will be opening an Apple shop in Al Araimi.

Aramex Shop and Ship is a viable option but not when all you want is a cable because shop and ship's minimum delivery cost for Oman is $15.

Apple products are great but their managers, especially the ones handling pricing, should take time to study the pricing of their competitors as well. Their over hyped product, iPhone, failed miserably in India due to over pricing.

That's a shame Kishor.

It is an awesome piece of kit.

I bought my first mac about two weeks ago. I haven't looked back. One or two things I prefer on the PC, but thats exactly it - one or two. I got a silver Macbook (non pro) and it rocks.

Bear in mind I was a massive Apple sceptic for the longest time - was wary of the marketing gimmicks and all that. Now, with my beloved ipod nano and silver macbook, I'm a believer.

But the price of Apple stuff dropped recently. The old white macbook, about 2+ months ago, was 650 here. Now its 490. The black was 750, now its 540. Most likely to do with the introduction of the silver, with I got for about 630.

The popularity of Mac products is growing here, and really...its about time.
